It’s been an unusually cold and wet in San Francisco of late. In fact, we had a stretch mid-January where it rained almost non-stop for 10 days. I’ve been feeling cabin-feverish and restless, however, I recognize that the rain is much-needed in drought-stricken California. In the 2 years I’ve lived here, I can recall just a handful of damp days.
Last week Mother Nature afforded us some sunnier weather, which conveniently coincided with a number of fun things on the calendar. Here’s a little glimpse into what I’ve been up to:
Winter Fancy Food Show
On Tuesday I went to the Winter Fancy Food Show to scope out the latest trends in food. What a treat! I spent about 4 hours roaming the aisles of two enormous conference halls, sampling new products and collecting more foodie swag than I could carry (literally).
I am going to save my favorite things for a separate post but dessert hummus, drinking vinegar, and powdered peanut butter scored highly. Probiotics and protein (particularly plant-based) were also everywhere.
Bay Area Nutrition Mini-Conference
On Saturday, I spent the day in Berkeley at the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Bay Area District mini-conference. Often I come away from nutrition conferences with new insights into the science of nutrition however the most valuable takeaways from this event had a different flavor.
This year’s Bay Area mini-conference was about stories and focused on dietitians who have forged a path for themselves in non-traditional settings. I loved hearing about their journeys, and found it so encouraging to see friends and colleagues making an impact everywhere from San Francisco airport to rural Mexican villages. Dietitians are an under-appreciated group, and it’s great to see others smashing through the glass ceiling.
Australia Day
Last Wednesday was Australia Day but we saved our celebration for Sunday night. For most Aussies, Australia Day involves some combo of barbecuing, beaching and boating however, since we’re smack-dab in the middle of winter in SF, we hosted a Sunday roast instead.
The roast lamb was demolished at record speed, along with an assortment of veggies, homemade sausage rolls, ANZAC biscuits and several glasses of red wine. Once again I found myself thanking my lucky stars for our tight-knit group of friends who are always up for good conversation and a meal.
New Recipe Videos
Finally, I have two new recipe videos up on YouTube. I am still getting the hang of this video thing, but I am proud
